DSS Service-Learning Course: Assistive Technology
This interdisciplinary project-based course focuses on the design, development, and use of technology that increases the quality of life of individuals with disabilities. Throughout the course, you will learn about various assistive technologies and strategies, including no-tech and low-tech as well as software and web-based practices. Software programming, physical computing, machine learning, and 3D fabrication will be introduced for constructing a prototype assistive device. In addition to lectures and discussions, you will take field trips to local facilities to interact with users of assistive technology in the local community. Students will participate in a team-based design project that involves identifying and understanding challenges that an individual with disabilities lives with and creating a novel and useful assistive device to meet their need.
Course Details: “Topics in Service Learning: Assistive Technology” is a letter-graded course taught by Professor Young Chung, spanning the second 7 weeks of the fall semester and the first 7 weeks of the spring semester. Scholars earn a total of 4 credits overall (2 credits per 7-week stage) and are required to commit to both the fall and spring because the spring course and service builds on the fall experience. The course begins the week of October 28, 2019 and ends the week of March 16, 2020 with winter break in between. In the fall, the course meets on Tuesdays from 4:45 - 7:45 pm. This course counts as an?Interactive Media Arts?and Disability Studies elective.?
Eligibility to Apply: Students of all years who can commit to the above?requirements and have either passed or will enroll in INTM-SHU 101 Interaction Lab by Fall 2019 are eligible to apply.
